Los Angeles, CA Homes For Sale

van vleck house and gardens

The Foundation created the Van Vleck Board of Management to oversee the property. There have been several houses on the grounds over the years; however only the U-shaped Italianate villa, home to Howard Van Vleck and his family, remains. Since 1989, our Preservation department has worked with more than 100 gardens across America. Together, they represent the broad range and rich diversity of garden types on our continent, as well as the distinctive character and cultural legacy of American gardens. Events like outdoor yoga, animal programs, and educational activities are hosted on the grounds for the community.

Visit

We’ve rounded up some of our favorites—broken up by category, like Japanese gardens or museum grounds—from botanical gardens in the San Gabriel Valley to a hidden oasis in a Hollywood Hills park. Be sure to take the narrow paths through small corridors of shrubs to experience a more romantic escape. The plants and flowers are designed so beautifully that it is easy to feel as if you might come upon a pair of lovers, meeting for a tryst amidst the azalea blooms. The gardens at the Dominguez Rancho Adobe Museum are teeming with orchards filled with lemon, orange, pear, apple, and other fruit trees. Located in Rancho Dominguez, the gardens are part of the oldest existing portion of the first Spanish land grant in California. The Dominguez family presents educational programs about the original homesteaders who lived in adobe houses during California’s early years.

You may not realize, though, that the acoustically impressive hall harbors a lush garden in its shadows. Whether you’re looking for a quiet place to sit on your lunch hour or a climb along the building’s lustrous exterior, it’s the perfect spot to both appreciate and escape the city. There are also lilac, orchid, fern and California native plant areas, as well as a tea house—flanked by seasonal cherry blossoms—donated by the Japanese-American community. The Van Vleck House & Gardens originated as a 12-acre private estate more than 140 years ago when Joseph Van Vleck Sr. and his family moved to Montclair from Brooklyn in 1868. Please stay on the pathways and grass and leave all plants as you found them (no picking).

This South Bay botanical garden covers 87 acres on the northeast side of the Palos Verdes Peninsula. You’ll find a mix of Southern California flora, from fuchsia to the talngled roots of Moreton Bay Fig trees, alonside more specialized areas like small Japanese and desert gardens. It may not be as grandiose as some other gardens, but it’s well worth the reasonable price of admission.

The bedrooms are light-filled, the rear one opening onto its own deck and garden access. Period character has been maintained and enhanced through sensitive updates. The converted garage excels as an office, screening room, or whatever you can imagine. ADUs have been added to other properties in the neighborhood, opening up the potential for new uses of the garage. The guest house has a bedroom with two closets and a loft and adds potential for income. Large lot with tall vinyl privacy fences, paving stones, and a low maintenance garden.

Antwerp Street

The garden is open for afternoon tours on Wednesdays, Saturdays, Sundays, and the first Thursday and Friday of the month. From mountains to beaches, California is a state full of natural beauty. With so many things to do in Los Angeles, the simplicity of a romantic walk in the park can get lost among the city’s bustle. When checking out the colors of LA, visit these must-see glamorous gardens.

Together we will be helping reduce food-insecurity in the community and supporting our neighbors. Donations go directly to local food pantries, just as the harvests from our Edible Garden provide delicious produce for Toni’s Kitchen. Howard took up residence in the home with his wife Harriet (Betty) Tomlinson. They raised their four children, Anne, Carolyn, Howard, and Roy here.

Van Vleck House & Gardens is located in a quiet and beautiful residential neighborhood of Montclair. Limos, van and party buses are no longer allowed at Van Vleck House & Gardens. While on a garden tour through Los Angeles, be sure to include a trip to the nearby South Coast Botanic Garden in the Palos Verdes Peninsula. With more than 2,500 species of flowers, trees, shrubs, and other plants, this botanic garden sits on 87 acres.

A lasting piece of his legacy are the hybridized rhododendrons he created. A number of his hybrids survive as special elements in the garden and several have been registered and named in memory of Van Vleck family members. Howard, Joseph Jr.’s son, left his architecture career to pursue his interest in painting and gardening full time. Howard had followed in his father’s footsteps and pursued a degree in architecture at Columbia University and a passion for the arts and horticulture. The Montclair Foundation provides grants bi-annually to a broad range of 501(c)3 nonprofit organizations working to improve our community. Because of the Coronavirus, gardens are frequently changing their rules as they hope to continue or resume operation during the pandemic.

The east side of Union Station is surrounded by flower beds, benches, cascading waterfalls, and fountains. Named for a former slave who became one of the first black landowners in 19th century Los Angeles, this courtyard park celebrates Mason’s life and legacy. Near the Santa Anita racetrack is an oasis of trees and flowers that will keep you busy for hours. Wander around the flowers, waterfalls, tropical forest, trees, and fishponds at the Los Angeles County Arboretum and Botanical Gardens.

Built to mimic a Roman country house, the villa’s central pool is flanked by flower beds and bronze busts, and its southernmost point offers the tiniest glimpse of the ocean. Make sure to explore both sides to find an edible garden and a fountain set against a vibrant mosaic. These gorgeous grounds in Arcadia have been designed as an educational facility (the plants are mostly arranged by region, and tours are available), but many people simply come here for a little peace and quiet. You could wander these gardens for hours, taking in tropical forests and waterfalls, trees and fish. Plus, be on the lookout for wild peacocks, which were first imported into the area in the late 1800s and have stuck around ever since.

The ancient forest provides a unique historical outlook of plant evolution. While you’re on a garden tour, take a short trek to Claremont to check out the California Botanic Garden. Dedicated to growing and preserving California’s native plants, the CBG promotes conservation, and education, and inspiration. Settled on 86 acres, you can see (and photograph) more than 22,000 of California’s native plants — some of them rare or endangered.

If you like waterfalls, this Park on South Atlantic Boulevard has a lot of green space and one very long waterfall. Relax and listen to the gushing, gurgling sounds of the cascading waters. Nestled on Monterey Road in Montecito Heights, Debs Park has many trails and picnic spots. There’s a nearby Audubon center for learning about the park’s birds and wildlife.

Please consider becoming a Member of Van Vleck to help us care for this most precious gift. Before visiting any of these gardens, please contact the gardens directly for their hours, especially during the current pandemic.
